Welcome to Atlanta
Written July 2020.
Let’s start with the most important information—no one calls it “Hotlanta.” There are signs at the airport dedicated to this fact. Local breweries have named beers after this tidbit. Commit this to memory. Acceptable nicknames for our famous southern gem include:
The A
A-Town
ATL
Dirty South
Wakanda (for real)
Hollywood of the South
If you don’t feel comfortable using any of these nicknames, stick with “Atlanta.” I would also life to encourage you to Google the words “Welcome to Atlanta” for helpful information. Atlanta has a history rich in hip-hop and rap culture, including the artists who wrote and produced Atlanta’s anthem, “Welcome to Atlanta.” Ludacris and Jermaine Dupri are loved and respected throughout the music industry and especially around ATL. But they aren’t the only ones.
Check out the Spotify playlist here for some of the best hits from artists who got their start from our beloved city. Keep in mind that when a town is nicknamed the “Dirty South,” even the radio edits and clean versions are rated PG-13 (but we’re all adults here).
